Instead, her blue-grey eyes focused on the river again. "I'm new to the Fae realms," Nesta said, not seeming alarmed by the question. "But you're High Fae, right?" Bryce angled her head, "You talk about them like you're not." I had noticed it too and Bryce was subtle enough that it didn't seem prying. Soft, quiet, and breathy, but I heard it all the same. "It seems no matter the place, the Fae always have a superiority complex," I chuckle, knotting the bottom of my braid before chucking it aimlessly over my shoulder. ![]() It seemed inevitable we would be getting in, and I began to plait my hair down my back, preparing for that plunge. "Sounds like the Fae in our world," Bryce's lip twitched. "They use the High part to make themselves sound more important than they are," Nesta shrugged, eyes rolling. "High Fae?" Bryce raised a brow, acrylic nails scratching at the bruises blooming to life on her jaw. "My powers are unusual amongst the High Fae." I nearly sagged with relief when her eyes finally left me. "I've never tried," Nesta said after a moment. ![]() "You can't winnow?" Bryce cleared her throat, trying to draw Nesta's sharp attention to her, "Amren said that the most powerful Fae could." I felt Nesta staring at me, unwavering, but I didn't meet her eyes and I didn't say anything else. "No," I said simply and then turned from her, looking back to the water with dread. "And you?" Nesta nodded at me, not one to miss even a second of eye contact between Bryce and me. And I let my sister see that uncertainty in my gaze. "Surely your magic would have recovered by now?" Nesta seemed surprised, gracefully rising to stand, "You were able to use your magic against me before the cave-in. Especially after what had happened with the Wyrm. It drained me," Bryce frowned, and I knew she hated admitting that. "You winnowed out of the cell," Nesta looked up at us over a slim shoulder, "You can't do so again?" She stuck her tongue out at me, and I knew she was suppressing the urge to flip me off. "Since when do we need a male to come save us?" I mocked, shooting Bryce a sardonic smile. Her eyes narrowed to the other side, too far to jump and yet we had to get there. "Now would be a good time for your friends with wings to find us," Bryce drawled, peering down at the rushing water passing by. It was bleak to consider just how much darkness existed in life. I released a tight breath as I tipped my head up, my eyes tracing over those strange cravings that seemed to cover every inch of the walls in here.
